BIDEN SAYS WILL GIVE GUN RECOMMENDATIONS BY TUESDAY: Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday (January 10th) that he will give President Obama a set of recommendations by next Tuesday to reduce gun violence, put together by the commission he's been heading that was assembled after the Newtown massacre. Biden sketched the outlines of the plan, including a ban on sales of assault weapons, limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines and universal background checks for gun buyers. His proposals are
also expected to include recommendations to address mental health care and violence on TV and in movies and video games. Biden met with sporting and guns rights groups during the day, including the National Rifle Association.  However, there was reportedly little movement from either side, with NRA president David Keene saying afterward, "The vice president made it clear, made it explicitly clear, that the president had already made up his mind on
those issues. We made it clear that we disagree with them."

JUDGE RULES ENOUGH EVIDENCE FOR ACCUSED AURORA KILLER TO FACE TRIAL: A judge ruled late Thursday (January 10th) that there's enough evidence for accused Aurora massacre suspect James Holmes to face trial on charges that he killed 12 people and injured 70 others in last July's Colorado movie theater attack. The ruling came after this week's pre-trial hearing, in which some evidence in the case was disclosed publicly for the first time. Holmes is due to be arraigned today, but his defense attorneys said he's not ready to
enter a plea, and will likely ask today that the arraignment be delayed. It's likely, however, that they will pursue an insanity defense.

STUDENT OPENS FIRE AT CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL: A 16-year-old student walked into a rural California high school on Thursday (January 10th) and opened fire with a shotgun, wounding one student and firing at others who he missed before a teacher and another staff member talked him into surrendering. The wounded student was in critical but stable condition. Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said that the suspect used a shotgun that
belonged to his brother, and had planned to shoot two fellow students at Taft Union High School. The suspect, who wasn't publicly named because he's a juvenile, said that the two students he targeted had bullied him
for more than a year.

GROUPS ON BOTH SIDES OF GUN DEBATE SEE MEMBERSHIP BOOST POST-NEWTOWN: Groups on both sides of the gun debate are reporting that they've seen membership boosts in the wake of the Newtown massacre and the national discussion over whether more gun regulation is needed that's arisen since. The National Rifle Association told Politico Thursday (January 10th) that it had gained more than 100,000 new members over
the previous 18 days. The powerful gun rights group said that its numbers had grown from 4.1 million to 4.2 million, saying, "Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over." Hours later, however, the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns reported to Politico that it had attracted more than 400,000 new members since the Newtown killings. The group, which is associated with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is a coalition that includes more than 800 mayors opposed to illegal gun use.

INAUGURAL NEWS AND NOTES: Evangelical Reverend Louie Giglio, who had been chosen to give the benediction at President Obama's second term inauguration on January 21st, withdrew yesterday (January 10th) after statements he made two decades ago condemning the gay rights movement surfaced. Giglio, of Atlanta's Passion City Church, said he withdrew because it was likely that the, quote, "prayer I would offer will be dwarfed by those seeking to
make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration." The Presidential Inaugural Committee said they'd chosen Giglio because of his work to end human trafficking, and hadn't known of his gay rights comments. The liberal website ThinkProgress had posted audio a day earlier of a sermon Giglio gave 15 or 20 years ago in which he called gay relationships sinful and an abomination, warned against what he called the "aggressive agenda" for acceptance of the, quote, "homosexual lifestyle," and recommended the writings of an advocate for therapy that's aimed at turning gay people straight.

In other inaugural notes:

  • The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced yesterday that the bible used by Abraham Lincoln for his first inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr.s so-called "traveling bible" will be used for President Obama's public swearing-in, which falls this
year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • The Committee has posted the menu for the Inaugural Luncheon online, along with recipes so anyone can try to make the dishes themselves. The three courses are: Steamed Lobster with New England Clam Chowder Sauce; Hickory-Grilled Bison with Red Potato Horseradish Cake and Wild Huckleberry Reduction; and Hudson Valley Apple Pie with Sour Cream Ice Cream, Aged Cheese and Honey.

SOUTH CAROLINA GOV.'S HUSBAND DEPLOYING TO AFGHANISTAN: Republican South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and her two children with husband Michael Haley bid an emotional farewell yesterday (January 10th) to the South Carolina National Guard captain, who is leaving for a year's deployment in Afghanistan. Mr. Haley will first undergo a month of
training in Indiana before being deployed as part of a unit that will teach Afghan farmers to grow sustainable crops. This is Haley's first deployment since joining the Guard in 2006. when a loved one is serving his or her country.

OBAMA SIGNS MEASURE GIVING LIFETIME SECRET SERVICE TO EX-PRESIDENTS: President Obama signed legislation yesterday (January 10th) that re-instates lifetime Secret Service protection for former presidents and their wives, reversing a 1994 law that ended the protection 10 years after a president leaves office. The law applies to presidents elected after January  1, 1997 -- which means Obama and former President George W. Bush -- since previous living presidents were already allowed to keep their lifetime protection. A sponsor of the bill, Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, said increased terrorist threats and
the greater mobility and youth of former presidents made the change necessary.

SCIENTISTS SAY ASTEROID THAT MIGHT HAVE HIT IN 2036 NOT A THREAT: Scientists say there's now one less thing for all of us to worry about, stating Thursday (January 10th) that an asteroid that they had calculated might hit the Earth on April 13, 2036, is no longer a threat. Astronomers were able to get a much better look at the asteroid -- called Apophis, after an evil Egyptian mythical serpent -- when it flew by Earth on Wednesday from some nine million miles away. They recalculated its trajectory and determined it won't hit the Earth.  Astronomers first saw Apophis about nine years ago and thought there was a 2.7 percent it would hit us in 2036, although they later lowered the chances to just 1 in 250,000. The asteroid, which is more than 1,060 feet wide, could do significant damage locally if it were to hit the Earth and possibly cause a tsunami, but it's not big enough to be able to trigger worldwide extinctions.

NFL'S SEAU HAD BRAIN DISEASE AT TIME OF SUICIDE: National Institutes of
Health researchers said on Thursday (January 10th) that former NFL player Junior Seau had the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is linked with
repeated blows to the head, when he killed himself last year. Seau, who was 43, had played in the NFL for 20 seasons before retiring in 2009. Seau's family had requested the analysis of his brain, with his ex-wife, Gina, telling AP, "We saw changes in his behavior and things that didn't add up with him." His family said that in the final years of his life, Seau had wild
behavioral swings, along with signs of irrationality, forgetfulness, insomnia
and depression. Seau joins a list of several dozen football players who were
found to have CTE.

AIRPORT CLEANER TURNS IN IPAD AND $13,000 CASH: A man who runs a cleaning service at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida not only turned in an iPad he found --he also turned in an envelope filled with $13,000 in cash. Patrick Morgan of
Patrick's Cleaning Service of Plantation said he was tidying up at a bar in
Terminal 1 on December 19th when he found the iPad along with an envelope. He
called security, who determined the amount of cash that was in the envelope.
Just minutes later, a man ran up to Morgan and reported his iPad missing.
According to airport officials, the man gave Morgan $60 for his honesty, which
he then gave to a homeless woman. Morgan said, "She was grateful. But she
was bugging me every day for money." The cleaning company that

TATTOO REVEALS SUSPECTS LIE: Florida police said a woman gave them a fake
name following a parking lot crash but the trick didn't work because of her
tattoo which displayed her birth date. Authorities in DeLand said 27-year-old
Daysha Moore tried to give them her sister's information after smashing her car
in a courthouse parking lot. An officer who looked up the sister's information
found out her photo didn't match the record. When Moore noticed an officer copying down
information from her tattoo, which read "01-14-1985" she admitted she lied about her
name and birth date. It turns out Moore was trying to cover up the fact that her
license was suspended. She was charged with giving a false name to a law
enforcement officer and cited for unsafe driving and driving with a suspended
license. (UPI)

RACCOONS LIKE IPHONES TOO: A raccoon that made off with a golfer's iPhone in West Palm Beach, Florida led course employees to its hideout after the used the phone's tracking system to locate it. According to workers at the Okeeheelee Golf Course, the raccoon -- dubbed Rocky -- has been stealing items from golfers for a while. Brian Acker, who owns the phone, enabled the phone's tracking system along with golf workers and followed the locator tone to the top of a 12-foot palm tree. They also found food wrappers. The course's
general manager said, "He has a taste for open food items left in golf carts and shiny items. The raccoon just saw something he liked and he went in there and grabbed it." (Orlando Sentinel)

LETTING OUT YOUR ANGER IS GOOD FOR YOU: Shout and let it all out-new German research finds that keeping in negative emotions such as fear, anger and anxiety can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. An analysis of 22-studies
covering more than six-thousand patients revealed that repressors, or people
who bottle up their emotions, have a higher heart rate and pulse ratio than
non-repressors. Study author Marcus Mund, Ph.D., says that repressors also show
more signs of stress than non-repressors. Scientists say this may happen
because chronically repressing negative thoughts makes the
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the part of the brain that controls your
reactions to stress, become hyperactive. (Men's

DAVE GROHL ADDS MORE BIG NAMES TO SOUND CITY PLAYERS GIG: Just one
day after it came out that Dave Grohl had enlisted Stone Sour's Corey Taylor to sing as part of his Sound City Players at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah on January 18th, additional music stars have been confirmed for the gig. Also joining Grohl that night will be all the members of his band Foo Fighters, the surviving members of his previous group Nirvana, plus Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, drummer Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine and several others, with more guests yet to be announced.

  • The show sold out within minutes of going on sale Wednesday (January 9th) and will celebrate the premiere -- earlier in the day on the 18th -- of Sound City: Real To Reel, a new documentary produced and directed by Grohl.
  • The documentary chronicles the history of Sound City, a legendary Los Angeles studio at which dozens of classic rock albums were recorded. Grohl interviewed a number of artists for the film and also arranged for older and contemporary artists to collaborate on new music for the project.
  • Sound City will be available in theaters, on DVD and on demand on February 1st. It can be pre-ordered directly from Grohl at the official film website.
  • An accompanying soundtrack album will arrive on March 12th. A song from that collection, "Cut Me Some Slack," featuring the members of Nirvana and Paul McCartney, was released last month.
  • According to a press release, the Sundance show is not a one-off gig: future Sound City Players lineups and dates will be announced as they are confirmed.

EX- THREE DAYS GRACE SINGER PLAYING SANDY RECOVERY BENEFIT: Former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier will play his first live show since exiting the group next
Thursday (January 17th), according to Loudwire. Gontier is slated to appear at Rock For Recovery, an acoustic benefit concert at New York City's Gramercy Theater that will raise money for victims of last October's Hurricane Sandy. Gontier will play solo on a bill
that also includes Art Of Dying, Hurt, Smile Empty Soul, Slipknot, DJ Sid Wilson and others.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the Mercury One Foundation.

  • Gontier confirmed his participation in the event via his Facebook page, offering fans the opportunity to win a pair of free tickets by sharing his Facebook post.
  • Fans were shocked on Wednesday (January 9th)
when Gontier's departure from the band he co-founded in Canada 20 years ago was announced, although it later came out that he resigned just before Christmas.
  • Three Days Grace revealed that My Darkest Days singer Matt Walst, brother of Three Days Grace bassist Brad Walst, would fill in as lead vocalist on the band's upcoming tour with Shinedown, which starts February 1st.
  • Although Three Days Grace cited a "health issue" as Gontier's reason for leaving, the singer himself said he had been "inspired by life, to move on and to continue to evolve on my own terms."

ALICE IN CHAINS UNVEILS OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘HOLLOW’: Alice In Chains has
released the official music video for "Hollow," the first song issued from the band's upcoming fifth studio album. The clip follows the day-to-day routine of a scientist working alone in a space station, with his mental and physical state gradually breaking down due to the effects of his isolation. The new clip follows a fan-made lyrics video for the song that came out last month, in which images submitted by fans through Instagram were matched to snippets of
the lyrics that the band posted online.

  • Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell recently confirmed to Guitar World that the band had finished recording the new disc, its second without original vocalist Layne Staley.
  • The CD will follow up 2009's Black Gives Way To Blue, which ended a 14-year gap between studio efforts for the group and featured singer/guitarist William DuVall.
  • The album is expected to arrive this spring,
although a title and exact release date have yet to be confirmed.

STONE
SOUR SINGER REVELAS INSPIRATION FOR CONCEPT ALBUM. COMIC BOOK:
Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has revealed some of the inspiration for House Of
Gold And Bones
, the band's two-part concept album which is also being spun
off into a four-part comic book series this spring. Taylor told Comic Book
Resources
that the themes of the sci-fi story draw heavily on his own life,
explaining, "I had an ideal of who I wanted to be as a man and I realized
who I was at the time didn't exactly jibe with what that idea was. So I started
the process of changing for the better -- it took me a long time, but I feel like
I'm a lot closer than I ever was to who I want to be."

He
added, "(House Of Gold And Bones) is loaded with that journey, but
it also has a lot of pieces from my friends' lives -- some are a lot more ahead
of the curve than others, but we are all doing the same thing: trying to figure
it all out. That's why I wanted to tell the story in the first place -- to put
it all in perspective and find my place in it all."

  • Taylor told us how he developed the lyrics for the
         project: ["I took basically
what was essentially a morality play and I was able to kind of twist it
into this crazy sci-fi fantasy world. That encouraged me to really get
weird with the lyrics, where it's essentially following the story and yet,
obviously because it's me, there's some personal refuse going on in
there, if you will (laughs)."] SOUNDCUE (:21 OC: . . . if you
         will.)
  • The singer also told Comic Book Resources
about the storyline, "The hero wakes up in a world he doesn't
understand, is bombarded with strange characters and in the end finds out
more about himself than he ever could have imagined."
  • The first issue of the comic book is due out on stands April 17th, around the same time that the second album, House Of Gold And Bones, Part 2, will be released. Part 1 came out last fall.
  • A single from Part 2, called "Do Me A Favor," will arrive next month.

TRENT REZNOR SPEARHEADING NEW MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE: Nine Inch Nails main man Trent Reznor has been named Chief Creative Officer of Daisy, a new
music streaming service being launched by Beats Electronics, the Dr. Dre-owned company that makes Beats By Dre headphones and other gear. According to Spin, Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine announced the service and Reznor's appointment on a Thursday (January 10th) conference call, saying that Reznor will play a large role in Daisy's design and the "connection
between the artist and the consumer."

  • Reznor explained in a December interview with The New Yorker that the service would help listeners find music they like through a less random approach than other online services, explaining, "It's like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't    necessarily have encountered."
  • Daisy is tentatively scheduled to launch sometime in the second half of 2013, with its pricing said to be "competitive" with other services. No artists have been announced yet.
  • Iovine said that other services like Spotify and Rhapsody offer "a math solution to an emotional problem," whereas Daisy will be a more personal experience.
  • Reznor, meanwhile, also has his hands full with his own music: his band How To
Destroy Angels will bring out its full-length debut disc, titled Welcome
         Oblivion
, on March 5th, and he's prepping two new Nine Inch Nails songs
for a greatest hits collection coming out next year. He has also done some
work on the new Queens Of The Stone Age set, due out this spring.
