ROMNEY BUOYED BY DEBATE PERFORMANCE: Both presidential candidates were back
on the campaign trail Thursday (October 4th) after their first debate the night
before, Republican nominee Mitt Romney
buoyed by his strong performance in a debate widely scored as a win for him,
and President Obama trying to
bounce back from what was viewed as a weak showing. Speaking before an audience
of conservatives in Denver, Romney repeated a line he'd used in the debate, saying
that Obama believes in, quote, "trickle-down government," adding,
"I see instead a prosperity that comes through freedom." Meanwhile,
Obama, showing energy he didn't the night before, told a crowd of supporters,
that what he called the "very spirited fellow" who stood next to him
on stage, quote, "does not want to be held accountable for the real Mitt
Romney's positions." He stated, "Governor Romney may dance around his
positions, but if you want to be president you owe the American people the truth."
Meanwhile, Romney said in a Fox News Channel interview last night that if he'd
been asked at the debate about his infamous "47 percent" remarks
captured on secretly-made video from a fundraiser earlier this year, he would
have said that he'd been, quote, "just completely wrong." That was a
change from his earlier defense of the remarks as just being, quote, "not
elegantly stated."

HUNDREDS
OF PEOPLE NOW SEEN AT RISK IN MENINGITIS OUTBREAK:
The potential scale of the meningitis
outbreak that has killed at least five people widened dramatically Thursday
(October 4th), as health officials warned that hundreds, and perhaps even
thousands, of patients who got steroid back injections in 23 states could be at
risk. The FDA also urged doctors not to use any products at all from the Massachusetts pharmacy that supplied the apparently
tainted steroid solution. So far, 35 people in six states have gotten sick from
fungal meningitis, and five have died, all of whom had gotten steroid shots for
back pain. Massachusetts health officials said yesterday that the
pharmacy involved, the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, has
recalled more than 17,000 single-dose vials of the steroid. Unlike the more
common bacterial and viral meningitis, fungal meningitis is not contagious.

91
PEOPLE CHARGED IN MEDICARE FRAUD SCHEMES:
Officials said Thursday (October 4th) that 91 people,
including doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, have been charged in
a sweep of Medicare fraud schemes involving seven cities and $430 million in alleged
false billing. Cases included improperly billing for home health services and
mental health services, writing prescriptions for patients who didn't qualify
for them, and giving patients kickbacks like food and cigarettes for attending
programs a hospital could later bill for.

TAX
WHISTLEBLOWER GETS $2 MILLION REWARD:
A lawyer for an anonymous tax whistleblower said yesterday
(October 4th) that his client had received a $2 million reward last week from
the IRS for his role in uncovering an alleged
multimillion-dollar tax-avoidance scheme attempted by Illinois Tool Works in
the late 1990s. Attorney Erika Kelton said that the informant, who's a Wall
Street banker, had previously gotten two other million-dollar payouts from the IRS. Informants to the IRS only receive their rewards after taxes
are collected, based on the information they provide. This whistleblower filed
his claim with the IRS in 2001. Illinois Tool Works makes a range of items, including
restaurant supplies, construction products, electronic components, auto parts
and industrial packaging.

STUDY:
FREE BIRTH CONTROL DRAMATICALLY LOWERS ABORTIONS, TEEN BIRTHS:
The results of a large new study out
Thursday (October 4th) found that offering women free birth control led to
dramatically lower rates of abortion and teen births. The research tracked more
than 9,000 women in St. Louis, many of whom were poor or uninsured, who were given their
choice of a range of contraceptive methods at no cost. The findings showed that
when price wasn't an issue, large majority of the women gravitated to the most
effective methods, which are the implanted types, and had far fewer unintended
pregnancies as a result. There were significant reductions among those women in
teen pregnancy and in abortion.

  • Nearly half of the nation's more than six
million pregnancies each year are unplanned, and an estimated 43 percent
of them end in abortion. Low-income women are much more likely to have an
         unplanned pregnancy.

KITCHENAID
APOLOGIZES FOR TWEET ABOUT OBAMA'S DEAD GRANDMOTHER:
Home appliance maker KitchenAid issued
an apology late Wednesday (October 4th) after an offensive tweet went out from
its official Twitter account during the presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney. After Obama, during the
debate, credited his grandmother who helped raise him and who died three days
before he was elected president in 2008, a tweet went out from KitchenAid that
said, "Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! 'She died 3 days b4 he
became president'." The tweet not only went to the company's 25,000
followers, but also included a hashtag to make it a part of NBC News' social
debate conversation. KitchenAid quickly deleted the tweet, but it had already
been noticed and retweeted, while others slammed the remark. Soon after,
KitchenAid apologized on Twitter and other social networks, writing on its
Facebook page, "My name is Cynthia Soledad, and I am the head of the
KitchenAid brand. I would like to personally apologize to President Barack
Obama, his family and everyone on Twitter for the offensive tweet sent earlier.
It was carelessly sent in error by a member of our Twitter team who, needless
to say, won't be tweeting for us anymore."

NAVY'S
WARSHIP NAMED FOR MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT MICHAEL MURPHY:
The U.S. Navy's newest warship has been
named for Medal of Honor recipient Michael
Murphy, a 29-year-old Navy SEAL who was killed with two comrades during
an ambush in Afghanistan in 2005. The destroyer USS Michael Murphy is being
commissioned this weekend in New York City in honor of the Long Island native. Murphy, the first person to win
the Medal of Honor for the war in Afghanistan, was leading a four-man team hunting a
key Taliban leader in a mountainous area when they were ambushed by some 30 to
40 militants. Murphy risked his life by going out into the open for a better
position to send a call for help. He was shot in the back and dropped the
transmitter, but just picked it back up and completed the call as he continued
firing. He died later, along with two fellow SEALs, after a two-hour gunfight.
The fourth member of their team escaped and was protected by local villagers
for several days before he was rescued.

EXACT
REPLICA OF TAJ MAHAL TO BE BUILT IN
DUBAI: Developers have announced plans to build an $350 million
exact replica in Dubai of India's famous Taj Mahal. The project will be called
Taj Arabia and include a 300-room five star hotel, apartments, restaurants and
shops. Among the developers' hopes is that the Taj Arabia will become a symbol
of love like the original, and a destination for weddings. The Taj Arabia will
join duplicates of the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China in Dubai's Falcon City of Wonders

RAMS
DEFEAT CARDINALS 17-3:

The St. Louis Rams beat the previously undefeated Arizona Cardinals 17-3 last
night (October 4th) at home in St. Louis. Despite getting the win, Rams
quarterback Sam Bradford
went just 7 for 21 for 141 yards and two touchdowns, the second-lowest total of
his career. Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb was
28 of 50 for 289 yards and was sacked a whopping nine times.

NHL CANCELS FIRST TWO WEEKS OF REGULAR SEASON: The NHL canceled the first two weeks of the regular
season Thursday (October 4th), from October 11th to 24th, because of the
ongoing player lockout. The players' union blamed the league, saying they
should lift the lockout and let the games go on while negotiations continue.
The two sides are battling over how to split $3 billion in hockey-related
revenues. The NHL says the union hasn't done nearly enough to try to get closer to
the league's proposal.

ONE-GAME BASEBALL WILD CARD MATCH-UPS TODAY: Two one-game wild-card match-ups will take place today (October
5th), one between the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals and
the Atlanta Braves and the other between the Baltimore Orioles and Texas
Rangers, with the winners advancing to the next round of the baseball playoffs.
The addition of the "one-and-done" round is part of the new, expanded
postseason format.

FEATHERWEIGHT
BOXER CRUZ COMES OUT AS GAY:
Puerto Rican featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz has come out as gay, describing himself in an
Associated Press interview yesterday (October 4th) as a, quote, "proud gay
man." It's believed the Cruz is the first professional boxer to reveal
that he's gay while still competing. Cruz told AP that although he had initial
reservations, he's relieved about his decision, which he made after meeting
with psychologist and others. He also said he has the full support of his
family, trainer and manager. The announcement comes two weeks before the
31-year-old challenges Jorge Pazos
of Mexico for the WBO Latino title. Cruz is ranked
as the World Boxing Organization's Number 4 featherweight and has a 18-2-1 record with nine knockouts.

NEW RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE ALBUM IN THE
WORKS?
Is a new Rage Against The Machine album in the
works? Probably not, but that didn't stop bassist Tim Commerford from having some fun with the ever-gullible
cameramen of TMZ.com. Asked outside a cafe in Malibu, California if the band was planning on bringing out
a new album, Commerford teased, "Maybe . . . maybe." The bassist then
quickly changed the subject to his missing front tooth, which he touted as the
result of his new hobby: "removing teeth."

  • Even though Rage Against The Machine reunited in
2007, the band has never given any indication that it plans to write or
         record new material.
  • As late as last year, guitarist Tom Morello told Pulse of Radio that a new album was
not on the quartet's agenda: "Right
now there are no -- you know, the band is not writing songs, the band is
not in the studio. We get along famously and we all, you know, intend to
do more Rage Against The Machine stuff in the future, but beyond sort of
working out a concert this year, there's nothing else on the
         schedule."
  • That concert, the L.A. Rising
festival in the summer of 2011, was Rage Against The Machine's last live
         appearance to date.

BEES
PRODUCING
BLUE AND GREEN HONEY: Beekeepers in the Alsace region of France said their bees are producing honey in
unnatural shades. A few months ago, the beekeepers noticed the bees carrying
unidentified colorful substances. After launching an investigation, the
beekeepers found that a nearby plant that processes waste from a Mars plant --
that produces M&Ms -- is the culprit. The waste processing plant has
already put in a procedure to stop the problem. While the M&M colored honey
tastes right, a beekeepers union rep said it's unsellable.

ONLY 4% OF MEN STILL WRITE LOVE LETTERS: The love letter is facing extinction.
New research has found that just six percent of women and four percent of men
still write love letters. Instead, they are turning to more modern methods and
choosing to text, email or send nice messages on Twitter. In the survey, 96
percent of women and 92 percent of men admitted sending romantic emails to a
loved one -- while 97 percent of women and 89 percent of men polled also
expressed their love through texts. Women were more likely to keep romantic
digital messages - with 62 percent saving emails and 32 percent saving texts.
But just 37 percent of men kept romantic emails and 15 percent save texts.
